History

The aim of history teaching at Green Oaks Federation is to encourage children to take an interest in the past and to understand how the world has changed and developed. History helps children to understand different societies and how the past has influenced life today in the UK and across the world.

In EYFS (Reception), children are taught about history within the ‘Understanding the World’ area of learning. In Reception, children will begin to make sense of their own life-story and family’s history, and recognise similarities and differences between the past and the present. They will build on this learning by making connections between the features of their family and other families as well as comparing and contrasting characters from stories, including figures from the past. This strand supports children to make sense of the world around them and also help them to develop a wide and enriched vocabulary.

Our History curriculum is taught through our thematic approach to learning and enables our children to develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that they will need to participate fully in a globalised society and economy.  We intend for them to understand the links and connections between events, people, places, cultures and environments through time at a local and global level.  Our global themes of Environment & Sustainability and Identify & Diversity provide further opportunity for children to apply learning in real and relevant contexts. We aim for all children to be able to link facts about the past to the events of today and our attitudes towards the future.
