Our Curriculum Intent

At Green Oaks we are committed to learning for life.

We understand that our children live in an ever changing world and that they will need the skills and attributes to be part of a global community. Education for global citizenship is a framework that is designed to equip our children for critical and active engagement with the challenges and opportunities of life in the world they live in. We want our children to develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that they will need to participate fully in a globalised society and economy.

At Green Oaks we believe that how we learn, think and act – both now and later – is important in being able to achieve a just, secure and sustainable global future for our children. We are therefore developing a curriculum that allows children to engage in the school, local and global community. This includes the opportunity to appreciate and understand different perspectives, reflect critically, contribute to society and lead change through real-life projects.

Implementation

At Green Oaks we will use our curriculum to help our children build the knowledge, skills values and attributes they need to be a global citizen.

Each term our children will become involved in a context that demands them to think and contribute at a local and global level. They will engage in an inquiry project that has a clear outcome and is linked to our values and the knowledge, skills and attitudes that we want them to build.

Examples may be:

• Sustainable development
• Challenging inequality
• Improving health and well-being
• Innovation and creativity

Curriculum subjects will be taught through our inquiry-led projects, allowing our children to make connections between subjects and apply their knowledge, skills and understanding.

Our children will have he opportunity to share their work with parents and the wider community during the year.

The Impact of our Global Curriculum

Our Global Curriculum will allow our children to build the skills and knowledge that they need to be creative, critical and analytical thinkers.

Our children will have the agency and purpose to learn and this will motivate them to acquire knowledge and apply this in a context that matters to them. The knowledge that they will achieve, and the attitudes to learning that they will acquire, will enable them to be a citizen who is able to contribute to both their local and global community.

Being a global citizen involves:

• asking questions and critical thinking
• exploring connections, our views, values and assumptions
• exploring the complexity of local and global issues from different perspectives
• exploring issues of social justice locally and globally
• applying learning to real-world issues and contexts
• opportunities for learners to take informed, reflective action and have their voices heard
• all ages and all areas of the curriculum
• enrichment of everyday teaching and learning
• the whole school environment
