Modern Foreign Language (MFL)
At Green Oaks we are committed to learning for life. We understand that our children live in an ever changing world and that they will need the skills and attributes to be part of a global community.
Our French curriculum is taught through the Language Angels Programme of learning and interwoven with our Global Inquiry Curriculum to enable our children to develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that they will need to participate fully in a globalised society and economy. We intend for them to understand the cultural, structural and verbal foundations of the French language in order for them to gain not only a working level of spoken and written language, but also an appreciation of and for another major global language and culture. Our children will understand how they are linguistically and culturally connected to those of other countries and how to be agents for positive intercultural change and collaboration on a global setting.
Implementation
We believe that children learn best through a connected curriculum where they are able to build curriculum knowledge through a precisely planned sequence of learning steps within the individual subject domain but also to make links across other curriculum subjects. Children should understand how their learning links together across lessons, across year groups and across Key Stages. Our French curriculum is therefore taught as a discrete subject, however the content will be scaffolded around our Global Curriculum for Inquiry with opportunities to understand how modern language foreign language learning is also important to build a deeper understanding in other curriculum subjects. The learning journey is based upon the respected Language Angels programme of learning which develops children's skills across aural, verbal and written skills in a recursive and cyclical manner enabling a progression of ability and confidence.
