Physical, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE)

At Green Oaks we are committed to learning for life.  We understand that our children live in an ever changing world and that they will need key essential skills and attributes to be part of a global community.  We believe that personal, social, health and economic education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to enable our children to develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that they will need to participate fully in a globalised society and economy. We intend for them to understand the links and connections between events, people, places, cultures and environments through time at a local and global level.  Our children will understand how their experiences are connected and how to be agents for positive change within their own and the wider community.  Although PSHE is a non-statutory subject, Relationships and sex education (RSE) is an important part of PSHE education. However, relationships education is compulsory for all primary school pupils.

Implementation

We use the PSHE Association programme to scaffold and provide guidance to inform our teaching and learning to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. PSHE education can help keep young people happy, healthy and safe. This resource breaks the PSHE curriculum down into its three core themes; Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World. We believe that children learn best through a connected curriculum where they are able to build curriculum knowledge through a precisely planned sequence of learning steps within the individual subject domain but also to make links across other curriculum subjects.  Children should understand how their learning links together across lessons, across year groups and across Key Stages.  Our PSHE curriculum is therefore taught as a discrete subject, however the content will be scaffolded and linked to other learning or national themed events as necessary.  The learning journey follows a seven step inquiry with PSHE objectives taken from the knowledge and skills content for each year group.  Parents are informed in advance that we are teaching RSE in their year group and are aware that they have the right to withdraw, if requested in advance in writing.
